The bench grinder wheel is a stationary tool that has many uses in the workshop. Unlike the hand held grinder that takes two hands to operate, the bench mounted grinder will maintain its position once it is turned on. This tool is ideal for many uses. One of them is for sharpening blades on lawnmowers or putting an edge on an old axe. This is also the preferred tool for shaping metal pieces before they are welded together.
When deciding to use a grinder or a hand held grinder, look at what you are about to grind. If it would be easier to hold the object and move it around the grinding wheel, then use the bench grinder. If the object is too large for this, a hand held grinder is recommended.

The bench grinder can be fitted with the same discs that a right angle grinder can be fitted with. This includes diamond studded discs for cutting, hard stones for removing abrasions, and polishing pads. One of the most common use for a grinder is to sharpen the tip of an old screw driver, but this is not all it can do.
The bench where the grinder is mounted must be sturdy. The rpm's the grinder will reach could cause a flimsy platform to collapse or wobble when in use. This would defeat the purpose of using a stationary grinder since it would be moving. No matter which kind you use, the bench grinder wheel or hand held grinder, the proper PPE should always be worn to protect the user from flying debris.
